The Pilot Course will take place over four (4) days with theory and practical training in the requirements of Piloting an oversize load.

The first three (3) days of the course are spent in our training room where you are taught the theory side of Piloting and you will undergo a series of written assessments. 

The fourth day of the course is spent on the road doing practical training and assessments, piloting a 4.7 metre wide load. The practical assessment requires each trainee to Pilot the permitted oversize load to act as lead Pilot and as Rear Pilot through a series of road closures and bride crossings.


Pre-requisites

To be able to enrol in the pilot course, all individuals must meet the following requirements:

  • Must hold a current full WA valid Driver’s Licence
  • Pass a Pilots Medical Assessment (form on Mainroads WA  website) –Valid for only 3yrs.
  • Must be physically fit with good mobility
  • Must be competent in numeracy and literacy skills

Because piloting can take you to very remote locations it is recommended you hold a current and valid first aid qualification.

Refresher Pilot Course – 1 day

The Heavy Vehicle Pilot Licence is valid for three years. To renew your licence you are required to:

  • Still hold a current WA Pilots Licence
  • Still hold a current full Australian Drivers Licence
  • Hold a current Pilot Medical with more than 12 months left on it
  • Successfully complete a refresher course

 How long before I get my Heavy Vehicle Pilot Licence after the training?

Once you submit your Pilot application form with all documentation required and  pay the pilot application fee (check price online), at the end of the course to Main Roads WA, it can take up to 10 working days to complete the licencing process and receive your card in the mail.
